Haiti Aid - Marine Corps relief efforts
Maj. Gen. Cornell A. Wilson, commander of Marine Corps Forces South and commander of Marine forces supporting relief efforts to Haiti said the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit has arrived of the coast of Haiti Jan. 18.
The USS Bataan Amphibious Readiness Group will begin operations immediately. Marines will sea-base off the coast and work with the U.S. Navy to supply food, water and medical assistance to the people of Haiti, Wilson said. The amphibious ships are equipped with helicopters, trucks, generators and water purification units, which Marines will use to support efforts, lead by USAID. There are also more than 130 vehicles stored aboard ship, which will provide critical mobility needed to support the mission. |
